Dawnshard is another of Brandon Sanderson’s great works in The Stormlight Archive series. The book falls between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War in the series and is a shorter book that incorporates the plotlines from within the Interludes of Oathbringer. By connecting to the short chapter found in the Oathbringer book, Sanderson connects to the next book in the series by adding some character background and explanation of a place within the world, just as he did in the short book, Edgedancer, where he developed the character, Lift, who has become a prominent character in the series so far.
In Dawnshard, the characters are sent to investigate a mysterious island and they are unsure what awaits them there. Secondary characters of the series shine within this book and the adventure they go on leaves so many questions that will lead into the next book of The Stormlight Archive series and make the reader wonder what will come of these characters in their fight against the Voidbringers.
Thesis Note: This book is a great example of an add-on book that adds a lot to the series. I have thought about using these in my series, but my books will be a lot shorter than Brandon Sanderson’s. Therefore, I will probably not read shorter books in between because the series does not have as many plotlines going through it. Being for a younger audience, my series will only introduce characters when absolutely necessary.
