Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard was filled with twists and turns to the very end. Mare Barrow has red blood and like everyone else with red blood, she is seen as lesser than those with silver blood and powers. The Silvers run the country and live in luxury, while the Reds serve them and fight and die in their war. Mare finds her way into the lives of the Silvers and finds out she is more like them than she ever knew before, but fitting in with them became a fight for her life and the lives of other Reds.
From the beginning, I loved the character of Mare Barrow. Her sass, cleverness, and overall strength made me want to root for her throughout the entire book. A love triangle that leads to unexpected turns made this book so much more successful. I was intrigued the entire time, and there was never a dull moment. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the quartet, Glass Sword, in the future.
Thesis Note: One thing I noticed was the fact that the war between the Silvers and Reds is referred to as “The First Divide.” In my novel draft, I currently have the first war fought in my world known as The First Divide, or simply The Divide, since no one knows a second war is coming. This book was published in 2016, so I don’t know if using the phrase would make anyone draw connections to the two novels, especially since my Divide is between two gods. This would be a good term to look up as I go into revisions.
