The first two words that come to mind after reading Sous-Faerie Soufflé were “chaotic” and “hilarious.” Young twins, Gerald and Desille, go to fetch water from a well and find themselves sucked through a portal into the world of Faerie. This book is full of crazy twists and turns that keep the readers engaged chapter after chapter. You’ll meet loud skeletons, adorable munshrooms, a kind bog bear, the mysterious villain, The Dark Rider, and so many other chaotic characters. After getting separated from each other, the twins set out to find one another and return home, but the journey leads them to find something they never thought possible.
The narrator of this book creates an entertaining fairytale element that introduces characters, fills in important information for the readers, and gets more and more involved in the story as it goes. The chaos in this book made me think about it throughout the day, and I never expected what was going to happen next. Throughout the magical happenings, the characters all showed growth in their own ways and were tested in multiple ways on matters of the heart. Full of love and adventure, this will be a story that I will read to my children one day.
Thesis Note: In this book, there were a group of characters that were together at the end, and each had their own storyline coming up to that point. I have a similar situation happening but haven’t been able to connect all the dots of who should be there. This book gave me a good idea of how to introduce characters and find a good reason to bring them together at the end.
