The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater is the first book in The Raven Cycle quartet. The book follows Blue Sargent and a group of boys that attend a prep school called Aglionby. The boys are referred to as the raven boys, and they are searching for a secret that lies beneath their town of Henrietta. Blue’s family is full of psychics and their abilities draw the raven boys to her in unprecedented ways. Their lives interweave and she joins their search for answers and will help them get closer than they ever had before.
This book was slow to draw me in, but once it had its claws in me, I didn’t want to put it down. The mystery and fantastical elements lured me in pager after page. The raven boys were set on solving a mystery, and every clue and connection made me want to be there to solve it with them. The characters were well developed and I am excited to read the next book in The Raven Cycle quartet, The Dream Thieves.
Thesis Note: The separation of perspectives between Blue and the boys helped the story weave together eventually. Especially with the Prologue establishing a connection between them that left me wanting to see them meet. As the book went on, the characters were with one another and it was an easy transition from them being apart at the beginning.
